Remove Silence from Audio

Cut every long silence out of a podcast, a voice note or a lecture in one go, and keep a short, natural pause in its place. It all happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

How to Remove Silence from Audio

  1. Open your file in the audio editor and choose the Pauses tool on the left. Remove silences is under the pause buttons.
  2. Set Longer than (1 second suits most speech) and Pause to keep (0.3 seconds sounds natural).
  3. Press Show them to see on the waveform what will be cut, and how much in all.
  4. Press Remove silences and play it back.
  5. Press the save button at the top right (Save MP3, Save WAV or Save M4A).

Questions

It finds no silences. Why?

The background is probably too loud to count as silence, for example a fan or traffic. Open More options and lower the dB value (try 20), or set a shorter Longer than. Removing the background noise first also helps.

Will it cut quiet words?

No. A silence has to be much quieter than the voice (30 dB under it, by default) and last at least as long as you set. The short pauses between words stay; only long gaps go, and a short pause stays in each.

How is this different from shortening the pauses?

Shorten pauses, just above it, shortens every pause a little until the audio reaches a target length. Remove silences cuts out every silence over the length you set, however long the result is.

Can I undo it?

Yes. Ctrl+Z (or the undo button) brings all the silences back in one step.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. The silences are found and cut in your browser. The file is read from your device and saved back to it.
