Compress an Image

Got a form that only takes pictures under 500 KB? Tell the photo editor the size, and it makes the picture fit. It all happens in your browser, so your photos stay private.

How to Compress an Image

  1. Open your picture in the photo editor. JPG, PNG and WebP work.
  2. In the Compress tool on the left, press one of the sizes (100 KB to 2 MB), or type your own under Make the file smaller than, in KB or MB.
  3. Press the save button at the top right (it says Save JPG, Save PNG or Save WebP, after the file type). The picture goes to your downloads.

Questions

Which format makes the smallest file?

For photos, WebP and JPG are much smaller than PNG. PNG also has no quality setting, so with a size chosen a PNG saves as JPG (the button says Save JPG). Keep PNG for screenshots and logos without a size limit.

My picture still looks blurry at that size. What can I do?

Make the picture smaller first in the Resize tool. A picture with fewer pixels needs less squeezing, so it stays sharper at the same file size.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. Nothing leaves your device: the picture is compressed and saved right there.
