Auto-Generate Subtitles

The video editor listens to your video, writes down what's said and times every word to the voice. It all runs on your device, so the video never leaves it.

How to Auto-Generate Subtitles

  1. Open the video editor and drop your video on it, or click to choose it. MP4, MOV and WebM work best.
  2. In the Subtitles tool on the left, choose the language spoken in the video in the menu next to Write subtitles for me (or choose Auto-detect), then press Write subtitles for me.
  3. The first time, the editor tells you it needs a speech model of about 85 MB: one for English, and one of the same size for the other languages and Auto-detect. Press Download and start. Your browser keeps the model, so next time it starts straight away.
  4. The editor listens to the video, writes what's said into the script box and times it to the voice. Read it through: fix a word in the box and press Match to the video again, or double-click a subtitle on the timeline to fix it there.
  5. Choose a look under Style and press Save MP4 at the top right. For a subtitle file instead, untick Burn into video and press Save subtitles (.srt).

Questions

Which languages does it understand?

English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Romanian, Czech, Swedish, Russian, Ukrainian and Turkish. Choose the language in the menu next to Write subtitles for me, or choose Auto-detect: the editor works out the language from the first words and tells you what it heard. English gives the most accurate words; in the other languages expect a few more to fix, especially with noise or fast speech. For a video in a language that isn't on the list, paste the script into the box and press Match to the video.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The only thing that comes over the internet is the speech model itself, once. Your video and its sound stay on your device the whole time; the privacy page explains the download.

How accurate is it?

It depends on the recording. Clear speech, one person at a time and quiet background music give the best result; mumbling, noise and loud music make mistakes more likely. Read the words through before you save.

How long does it take?

The download takes a minute or less on a fast connection. Then it works through the video piece by piece and shows how far it has got; a short clip is done in seconds. Press Cancel to stop.

Does it work when I open the editor from a file?

No. Writing subtitles needs the website, which fetches the speech model. Opened from a file on your computer, you can still paste the script and press Match to the video.
