Crossfade Audio

How to Crossfade Audio Files

  1. Open the first file in the audio editor. In the Merge tool on the left, press Add files and choose the files that come after it; the ↑ and ↓ arrows put them in order.
  2. Under Between files, choose Crossfade.
  3. Set the length in seconds. 1 second is a good start for speech; 3 to 5 seconds suit music.
  4. Press Crossfade 2 joins (the number is how many joins are still plain). Each file that now fades in from the one before shows crossfaded in in the list.
  5. Play across the joins, then press the save button at the top right (Save MP3, Save WAV or Save M4A).

Questions

Does a crossfade make the result shorter?

Yes, by the crossfade length at each join, because the end of one file and the start of the next play at the same time.

Can I try a different length?

Yes. Press Ctrl+Z, or the undo arrow under the waveform, to take the crossfades back, change the length and press the button again.

Can I crossfade only some of the joins?

The button crossfades every join that is still plain. To keep a hard cut somewhere, crossfade first and add the next file afterwards: the new join stays plain.

Is there a longest crossfade?

Up to 10 seconds, and never more than half of the shorter of the two files, so that each file is still heard on its own.
