Extract Audio from a Video (MP4 to M4A or MP3)

Keep only the sound of a video: a talk, a song, a voice-over. The video editor saves it as M4A; if you need MP3, the audio editor converts it in a second step. Both run in your browser.

Extract the Audio

How to Extract Audio from a Video

  1. Open your video in the video editor. MP4, MOV and WebM work best.
  2. Cut away anything you don't want to keep, if you like.
  3. In the Sound tool on the left, press Save sound (M4A). You get an M4A file (AAC sound at 192 kbps) of the edited video, with its cuts, volume, music and fades.
  4. Need MP3? Open the M4A file in the audio editor, choose MP3 in the Convert tool and press Save MP3 at the top right.

Questions

Why M4A and not MP3 straight away?

The video editor uses the sound encoder built into your browser, and that one makes AAC sound, which goes in M4A files. M4A plays on almost every phone and computer. The MP3 encoder lives in the audio editor, which is why MP3 takes one more step.

Will the sound lose quality?

A little: the sound is encoded again, at 192 kbps, which is hard to hear for speech and most music. Turning it into MP3 encodes it once more, so pick 256 or 320 kbps there (under More options) to keep it clean.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The sound is taken out on your device, and the files are saved straight to it.
