How to Make a GIF from a Video

  1. Open your video in the video editor. MP4, MOV and WebM work.
  2. Drag on the timeline to select the part you want, up to 15 seconds. With nothing selected, the GIF is the first 10 seconds.
  3. In the GIF tool on the left, choose a Width (320, 480 or 640 px) and a Frame rate (10 or 15 frames a second). The tool shows the size the GIF will have.
  4. Press Save GIF. The GIF goes to your downloads.

Questions

Why only 15 seconds?

GIFs get big fast: every frame is a full picture. Fifteen seconds at 320 px is already a few megabytes. For longer clips, save an MP4 instead; it is much smaller.

Are subtitles and text in the GIF?

Yes. The GIF looks like the saved video: subtitles burned in, text from the Text tool, your logo, filter and speed are all in it.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. GIFs can't hold sound. To keep the sound, save the part as an MP4.

Why do the colours look a little rough?

A GIF can only use 256 colours per frame, so smooth skies and gradients can show bands. A smaller width or a lower frame rate also makes the file smaller.
