How to Make a YouTube Thumbnail

  1. Open your photo in the photo editor. JPG, PNG and WebP work. The Cover tool on the left turns it into a cover.
  2. Under Where it goes, press YouTube thumbnail (1280 × 720).
  3. Press a Design, then type your words under Headline and Small text. Each design tile shows your own photo and words.
  4. Press one of the Colours sets, or pick your own Background, Shapes, Headline and Small text colours under More options. Drag the photo on the cover to move it, and use Photo zoom to get closer.
  5. Press the save button at the top right (it says Save JPG, Save PNG or Save WebP, after the file type). The thumbnail goes to your downloads named cover-youtube-thumbnail, at exactly 1280×720.

Questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

1280×720 pixels, the 16:9 shape of a video. YouTube also wants the file under 2 MB; the bottom of the editor shows about how big the saved file will be, and a JPG thumbnail is usually far below that.

What is the dashed line on the thumbnail?

It marks where text stays clear of what YouTube draws on top, such as the video's length in the corner. It is only a guide: it isn't saved, and you can hide it in More options with Show the safe area.

Can I change the fonts?

Yes. Each design picks its fonts, and More options lets you choose the headline and small-text fonts, their size and capitals yourself, from four free fonts.

Is there a watermark, and is my photo uploaded?

No watermark and no upload. The thumbnail is made and saved in your browser; nothing leaves your device.
