How to Style Your Subtitles
- Open your video in the video editor and add subtitles in the Subtitles tool: paste the script and press Match to the video, press Write subtitles for me, or press Load .srt or .vtt.
- Under Style, press a style. The video shows it straight away.
- Open More options to change the Font, Size, Height, Colours and Capitals. Reset style takes the style back to how it was.
- To light up each word as it's said, choose Colour or Box under Spoken word and pick its colour. Bold social, Word highlight, Pop and Karaoke do it already.
- Press Save MP4 at the top right. The subtitles are saved in the picture, in the style you chose.
The Twelve Styles
- Classic: white words with a black outline. Reads on any picture, for any video.
- Box: white words on a dark box, one box per line or one around them all. Good over busy pictures.
- Bold social: big capitals with the spoken word in yellow, for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
- Word highlight: heavy words with a coral box behind the word being said. Easy to follow without sound.
- Brand bar: a full-width navy bar with a coral edge, the words on the left. Neat for explainers and company videos.
- Minimal: a serif font with a soft shadow, low on the picture. Calm, for films and interviews.
- Pop: capitals with a thick pink outline and a hard shadow, the spoken word coloured. Loud and playful.
- Karaoke: each word fills with colour as it's sung or said. Made for music and sing-alongs.
- Gradient: the words on a rounded pill that shades from one colour to the next. Modern and clean.
- Sticker: dark words on a tilted white sticker. Fun for vlogs and short clips.
- Neon: a pink glow on a dark see-through panel. For night shots, gaming and music.
- Lower third: a serif line on the left over a fading dark band with a thin yellow line, like TV. For interviews and talking heads.
Questions
Which style is best for TikTok and Reels?
Bold social, Pop or Word highlight: big words high enough to stay clear of the app's buttons, with the spoken word lit up so people can follow with the sound off.
What does the second colour do?
It depends on the style: the outline, the box, the highlight, the glow or the bar. Its label under Colours says which, and each style remembers your choice.
Can I keep my font and size when I switch styles?
Yes. What you change under More options stays when you press another style; Reset style goes back to the style's own settings.
Do the styles work in a subtitle file?
No. A style is drawn into the picture when you save the MP4. An .srt file holds only the words and their times; the app that plays it decides how they look.
